I./JG 1 surrender their He 162 jets at Leck on 8 May 1945

I./JG 1 surrender their He 162 jets at Leck on 8 May 1945 (according to the inscription on the reverse of these images currently on offer via Heiko Fuchs Ebay sales). Personal accounts document the mix of resignation and relief felt by those stragglers from JG 4 who had managed to fall back to Schleswig Holstein to surrender to the British alongside their comrades from JG 1. This extract from the JG 4 war diary for Sunday 06 May 1945 taken from my own translation of Eric Mombeek's history of JG 4 (Vol II)..

"..Our aircraft, vehicles and other equipment are lined up as if for one last parade. The sight is an impressive one and will certainly give the British food for thought. We are proud to show off more than one hundred of our aircraft like this - from the ultra -modern Me 262 and He 162 that have flown only limited numbers of combat sorties - to the Bf 109 and Fw 190 fighters that have returned victories in thousands of successful air battles. All will pass into enemy hands. This afternoon several light tanks and trucks bring RAF ground forces onto the airfield. Oberst Nordmann, and then the Kommodore and Kommandeure, have to go before the Colonel commanding the RAF forces. To our great surprise they receive a handshake by way of greeting! However while we are airmen together we remain sceptical as to what may follow the courtesies that our extended to us: what will happen when the other occupation forces arrive? The first orders are to draw up an inventory of all our matériel. All weapons must be handed in apart from the officers side-arms...."

Focke Wulf 190 in Sicily - Ebay photo find

Ju 88 D "Vi+N." most probably on the strength of 4.(F)/122 seen at Rome Ciampino-Nord during 1943

below; inscription on the reverse reads " Fw 190 on Sicily, 1943". According to the seller this Fw 190 is a " Jagdbomber mit Tarnanstrich für Nachteinsätze" -a Jabo fighter bomber finished in a camo scheme for night operations....the black distemper obscuring both national insiginia and Staffelkennzeichen rather recalls the finish given to Fw 190s of the SKG that operated night sorties over the UK during April 1943  - the remnants of that unit were in fact posted to Sicily in advance of the Allied invasion which took place in the summer of 1943...

Daily Ebay.de photo find - some search tips

You probably already know this, but why not set up your own daily Ebay.de list search - its a lot easier than you think..

When searching Ebay for Luftwaffe photos I tend to look first at certain 'preferred' sellers, eg Marco at koelsch333, Heiko Fuchs or Michael Meyer ( see tag links below... )

But it is fairly straight forward to set up a daily e-mail schedule which will send lists of photo links and an over-view of your preferred search items direct to your in-box..

go to ebay.de and add your search words in the search box  - you will need to use some very basic German words that you will probably already be familiar with eg 'Flugzeug' (aircraft), Jagdflieger (fighter pilot), 'Besatzung' (crew) 'Staffelabzeichen' (Staffel emblem),'Fliegerhorst' or 'Flugplatz' (airfield), or even the rather English-looking 'Pilot im Cockpit'. Obviously if you are looking for photos precede your search word with 'Foto' or 'Aufnahme' (photo) or 'Abzug' (print) or 'Bild' and 'Bilder' (picture/pictures) A simple 'Foto Cockpit' brings up 40 results today alone..

You will get a list of search results eg  "135 Ergebnisse gefunden  = results found.."

135 Ergebnisse gefunden für Foto Junkers   Suche speichern

to the right of your search results you will see a clickable link  "Suche speichern"  = "save search"

click on "save search"  to bring up a box ; the text translates " send daily email when new items are offered corresponding to your search criteria ".  Ensure the check box is ticked -

hey presto, you will henceforth receive a daily email of your stored searches. Fill in as many searches as required eg " Foto Staffel Wappen "  " Foto Luftwaffe Flugzeug " " Foto Fw 190....etc

Other useful search words are 'Top'  ( which basically means excellent or 'ausgezeichnet') and words such as 'selten' (rare) or 'Archiv' or 'Original' etc etc. Add some basic abbreviations such as JG or NJG if night fighters are of interest for example....
